WISMA GEYLANG SERAI COMPETITION
This scheme attempts to emulate the essence and programmatic equivalent of the Malay Kampung. The organic and loose hierarchy of layout of the houses and the lack of physical barriers give the kampong an informal and open atmosphere which is conducive to intimate social relations. Our scheme aspires to create this same spatial relationships between the different programmatic demands of the brief. The central street and public plaza is the common tie that binds the different spaces in a sort of overlooking quality into each other's private domain and activity. At the same time, within the private domain of the individual spaces, one can look out to the street and witness passers-by entering and leaving the complex. This visual and spatial relativity gives the same sort of connection that typifies the Malay village that makes each house the sum of the community as a whole.
